Dr. Sobrin is a professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and a practicing retina and uveitis specialist. As the Associate Chief for Data Science at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, she is responsible for oversight of all data science endeavors including the creation of the hospital’s ophthalmic imaging repository, the integration of Infirmary’s electronic medical record (EMR) data into the larger Research Patient Data Registry, and enrollment of patients into the Mass General Brigham Biobank. Her main research interests are in the epidemiology and genetics of complex ocular traits, particularly retinal diseases. Initially, her work was on the genetics of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and identified the ARMS2 locus as a risk for neovascular AMD. She then focused on diabetic retinopathy (DR).
She currently serves as the chair of the Genetics Committee of the DRCR Retina Network. She has served as the principal investigator or co-principal investigator for several multi-center DR studies including the Candidate Gene Association Resource (CARe) DR Study, the African American Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (AAPDR) Study, the Multiethnic Genome-wide Association Study (GWAS) of Diabetic Retinopathy, and the South Indian GeNetics of DiAbeTic Retinopathy (SIGNATR) Study. These studies have all involved analyses of fundus photographs and/or optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of participants.
