Dr. Itika Garg was born and raised in Chandigarh, India. She earned her medical degree with honors from the Government Medical College Chandigarh in 2013. She went on to complete her ophthalmology residency from India’s premier institute – Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in 2017. Dr. Garg then worked as a comprehensive ophthalmologist through the end of 2019. During this time, she discovered her passion for clinical research, and was accepted into the highly competitive Global Clinical Scholars Research Training (GCSRT) program at Harvard Medical school on a scholarship, designed to help clinicians forge successful careers as clinician scientists. She moved to Boston in early 2020 and simultaneously pursued a Retinal Imaging clinical research fellowship at Harvard Retinal Imaging Lab, Mass. Eye and Ear, Boston through 2022. Prior to joining Tulane as an ophthalmology resident in 2022, she had published over twenty papers in top peer-reviewed journals. She has also presented her work at many National and international annual meetings and has been a recipient of an international travel grant for the same. Dr. Garg has a special interest in the field of retina, especially retinal imaging biomarkers, and has worked on several research projects but her most significant research endeavor has been to come up with an imaging algorithm to quantify non-perfusion in diabetic retinopathy on OCT Angiography. During the pandemic, she also worked on a model for remote imaging which has potential applications in tele-ophthalmology. She continues to work on her research during residency and aspires to build a career as an academic clinician, and pursue her love for ophthalmology, clinical research, data science, the retina, and lifelong teaching.
