Dr. Friedman is a world-renowned expert in the field of ophthalmology, focusing on the mechanisms, epidemiology, and prevention of angle-closure glaucoma. His pioneering research, which has identified novel dynamic risk factors for angle closure, has led to a paradigm shift in how angle closure glaucoma is treated.  He was a lead investigator on two landmark clinical trials for angle closure, both of which were published in the Lancet (the EAGLE Trial and the Zhongshan Angle Closure Prevention (ZAP) Study). With over 400 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Friedman is a recognized authority globally, and his work continues to influence the landscape of glaucoma care.

As the Director of the Glaucoma Service, Dr. Friedman is celebrated for his clinical excellence and innovative approaches to treating all forms of glaucoma, except pediatric cases. His expertise is sought both domestically and internationally, and he remains at the forefront of advancing glaucoma care through his roles in research, clinical practice, and education.

Dr. Friedman’s research initiatives include a recently funded CDC program to develop novel screening methods for underserved populations.  His team will use artificial intelligence to assess the optic nerves of patients undergoing screening photography of the retina for diabetes care.  Dr. Friedman leads and collaborates with a dynamic team of researchers, biostatisticians, and programmers, driving the integration of artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies into clinical care.
